Researchers from the US Geological Survey (USGS) have found increasing levels of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-) ions in groundwater across the United States, indicating a rising trend of salinity in the nation’s groundwater. The researchers suggest that this increasing salinity could have implications for infrastructure, ecosystems, and human health, emphasizing the need for enhanced monitoring and management.
Forecasts have Texas facing a severe water shortage as the state’s water supply could fall 18% while demand rises 9% by 2070. At the same time, experts are forecasting there will be a surplus of twice that amount in water associated with oil and natural gas production.
